Understanding the Board's Role

The University of Utah operates within the Utah System of Higher Education (USHE). Under Utah law, the Utah Board of Higher Education (UBHE) serves as the governing board for Utah's public colleges and universities. The University of Utah Board of Trustees exercises the authority delegated to it by the UBHE and state law and performs additional responsibilities assigned by University policy. Day-to-day management and operation of the University are delegated to the President and University administration.

Communicating with the Board

Because the Board’s responsibilities focus on institutional governance and oversight, most operational decisions are delegated to the President and University administration. As a result, many questions or concerns are most effectively addressed through established administrative or University governance channels rather than through the Board of Trustees.

If you believe your communication concerns a matter within the Board’s governance responsibilities, you may submit it to the Office of the Secretary.

Communications are reviewed and routed to the appropriate office. Depending on the nature of the communication, information may be shared with Trustees, referred to University administrators for review and response, or handled through established university procedures.
